Hi all This week's big release is the sequel to robot-overlord nightmare Pacific Rim, with plenty of action to keep you entertained. Staying with the action, and adding some ex-local talent, we have Gringo, while the art circuit has an offbeat May-December romance based on a true story. Since we are coming up to Easter, as is becoming something of a tradition, Hollywood rolls out a film to um, celebrate/take advantage of (pick one), and this year it's all about Paul and Luke. Lastly Bollywood takes a look at what happens when a teacher has Tourette's Syndrome. It's a busy week for previews, with Peter Rabbit showing all day Saturday all over, Ready Player One at select venues on Tuesday evening, upcoming Afrikaans chick-flick comedy Susters in many places Saturday evening, and Tyler Perry's Acrimony having what looks like gala premiers on Wednesday evening at select venues. See the previews page and remember to book. A quick look at how Black Panther is doing, with this from BoxOfficeMojo after last weekend: ================= For the fifth weekend in a row, Disney and Marvel's Black Panther is the weekend's number one film at the domestic box office, becoming the first film to accomplish that feat since Avatar in 2009. The film is also only the seventh film to ever gross over $600 million at the domestic box office as it continues to dominate, now less than $18 million shy of topping The Avengers and becoming the highest grossing superhero movie of all-time. With an estimated $27 million, Black Panther finished atop the weekend box office for the fifth straight weekend, pushing the film over $605 million domestically. As a result, Black Panther joins Avatar and The Sixth Sense as only the third film to top the weekend box office for five straight weekends in the last 19 years. (ie since Titanic - Ed.) Alongside its domestic achievements, Black Panther added an estimated $30 million internationally this weekend, pushing its overseas cume to $577.1 million for a global tally topping $1.183 billion, passing Captain America: Civil War ($1.153B) and Minions ($1.159B) to become the fourteenth largest worldwide release of all-time. ================ Locally Black Panter is sitting at R 77,603,132 as of last weekend, after 5 weeks, while the previous box office champ, The Fate of the Furious, took 9 weeks to reach R 72 422 494, and then dropped out of the top ten. The general expectation is that Pacific Rim: Uprising will displace Black Panther at the top of the box office. They got that wrong! Turns out I'm actually: "Only pupil who didn't die in a mysterious unexplained accident." --------------------------------------------------------------------------- A man went to the Police Station wishing to speak with the burglar who had broken into his house the night before. "You'll get your chance in court." said the Desk Sergeant. "No, no no!" said the man. "I want to know how he got into the house without waking my wife. I've been trying to do that for years!" --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I went to my friend's house recently and noticed that his Christmas tree was bare except for a shotgun shell near the top. I asked, "What's the deal, no decorations?" Puzzled, he looked at me and said, "What do you mean? It's a cartridge in a bare tree." --------------------------------------------------------------------------- An Irishman suddenly realizes his house is on fire. He immediately dials 999 The fireman answers, "Yes may I help you?" The Irishman replies, "My house is on fire, come quick!!!" The fireman asks, "How do we get there?" The Irishman says, "Duh, big red truck!" --------------------------------------------------------------------------- A real woman is a man's best friend. She will never stand him up and never let him down. She will reassure him when he feels insecure and comfort him after a bad day. She will inspire him to do things he never thought he could do; to live without fear and forget regret. She will enable him to express his deepest emotions and give in to his most intimate desires. She will make sure he always feels as though he's the most handsome man in the room and will enable him to be the most confident, sexy, seductive and invincible. No wait... Sorry.. I'm thinking of whiskey. It's whiskey that does all that stuff. Never mind. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
