In essence, a coming of age tale for a young woman. As a Jewish girl in Russia around the time of the Great Depression, her father leaves for America to earn money. Years later, as a young woman, she ends up in Paris on the eve of World War II. She is working as a singer and dancer in the theatre, where she makes friends with a Gypsy man. At the same time, her mate is throwing herself at a famous Italian singer. Then the Germans invade, and their hatred of Jews and Gypsies soon causes problems for the lovers.|
