Little Women
A slightly different take on the classic Little Women, which draws on both the novel and the writings of author Louisa May Alcott. The story unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life in the aftermath of the US civil war. The film comes bearing a host of wins and nominations, included six nominations for the Oscars.

CommentsThe material contains complex and mature themes light-hearted themes of historical prejudice of women progression being viewed only in marriage, societal pressures for women on marriage, sisterhood, aspirations and dreams of becoming something in life, breaking boundaries, coming of age, family love, endearing hardships, being charitable and compassionate, post war struggles, being honest and faithful, romance, friendships, disappointments, finding ones path, sibling rivalry, grief, love for independence and finding happiness. Themes are emotional, sentimental and historical based on the adaptation of a classic novel. Themes of feminism and independence are present throughout the film but presented subtle, in a light-hearted manner which is non-threatening and non-disturbing. The determination of the sisters to be independent amidst prejudices of the times and period is inspirational. It is a family drama which educates about unity, love, family, marriage, believing in oneself, forgiveness and finding happiness. Parental supervision is recommended to provide historical context to much younger children.
