This film is set during the height of the McCarthy era in the USA, where leading media figures were investigated for their alleged sympathies to communism, The successful career of 1940s screenwriter Dalton Trumbo comes to a crushing end when he and other Hollywood figures are blacklisted for their political beliefs. However he has powerful friends in the industry, and they conspire to let him continue working undercover. His most famous script is probably Spartacus, starring Kirk Douglas.
