In the Land of Blood and Honey

In the Land of Blood and Honey
Angelina Jolie moves behind the camera for a change. Set during the troubles in Serbia, a young Serb first meets a young Bosnian woman on the dance floor. Their flirtations are brought to an abrupt end by a bomb attack. It is 1992 and Yugoslavia's civil war is raging. He becomes a soldier with orders to obey, while she is now a woman who lives in fear of her life. Shortly afterwards she is imprisoned at an internment camp where rape and torture are the order of the day. She uses the attraction between her and her erstwhile dance partner, now one of the guards, to her advantage, but he is driven by his father to prove himself in a way she does not want.

What the Critics say

Cape Times
Todd McCarthy quote iconA blunt and brutal view of genocide and ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the early 1990s, this film is a serious piece of work and not simply a vanity project.
10
Box Office
Nick Schager quote iconThis wannabe-serious film comes off as not just unenlightening, but borderline-interminable.
5
Chicago Sunday Times
Roger Ebert quote iconAngelina Jolie deserves admiration for making In the Land of Blood and Honey as her first filmmaking project. She wrote it, directed it and cares deeply about its issues, having spent a lot of time on the ground there, unlike so many movie stars who only turn up for the photo op. Jolie has courage and convictions.
