The Help

Change begins with a whisper.

The Help
Set in the early 1960s, a time of racial upheaval in the USA, a young woman returns home from college, determined to become a writer. She decides to write some articles about the maids employed by her family and friends, and in the process stirs things up a bit in her conservative, racially-obsessed South. Things come to a head when the articles are turned into a book and published, with the author listed as ''Anonymous.'' The film has found favour amongst female audiences and generally had good reviews.

eye Weekly
Sara Maria Vizcarrondo quote iconA chick flick for do-gooders, The Help suffers from a malady common to the discrimination drama: its treatment of inequality is more condescending than the prejudice it aims to remedy.
5
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers quote iconA deeply touching human story filled with humor and heartbreak is rare in any movie season, especially summer. That's what makes The Help an exhilarating gift.
18
ScreenIt
T. Durgin quote iconIn an age of 3-D eye abuse and increasingly base and smutty comedies, here is a film that celebrates the human spirit and delivers a true cinematic experience. It will indeed go down as one of the best movies of 2011 and one of the rare times you'll see a perfect 10 out of 10 score from Yours Truly.

Tomatometer quote iconThough arguably guilty of glossing over its racial themes, The Help rises on the strength of its cast -- particularly Viola Davis, whose performance is powerful enough to carry the film on its own.
