The Spirit

Down these mean streets a man must come. A hero born, murdered, and born again

The Spirit
Frank Miller's first solo directing effort has not garnered the enthusiastic support that his previous film efforts did. Based on a comic series from decades ago, it tells the tale of a policemen who was killed and resurrected. Still dedicated to fighting crime, though now largely immortal, he has to take on The Octopus, a baddie with eight of everything. There are a plethora of gorgeous women involved as well, some from his past, and some new, who bring various twists to the plotline. Expect a lot of style, and dubious substance.

Box Office
Mark Keizer quote iconThe film features a terrible script devoid of characters worth investing in or a story worth caring about. Fanboys will come out to play initially, but poisonous word of mouth should send them home to await the next sci-fi convention.
1
Chicago Sunday Times
Roger Ebert quote iconThe Spirit is mannered to the point of madness. There is not a trace of human emotion in it. To call the characters cardboard is to insult a useful packing material. The movie is all style — style without substance, style whirling in a senseless void.

ScreenIt
C. Fuchs quote iconThe Spirit sports an imaginative look and occasionally comes up with some fun moments and bits of dialogue. Otherwise, however, it's just a cool looking ghost with nothing of interest inside.

Tomatometer quote iconThough its visuals are unique, The Spirit's plot is almost incomprehensible, the dialogue is ludicrously mannered, and the characters are unmemorable.
