Goya's Ghosts

Tell me what the truth is

Goya's Ghosts
Set in Spain from around 1780 onwards, this movie takes a look at events which occurred during the life of the famous artist Goya. The plot is a little convoluted, but revolves around the Inquisition, and one of their victims. She is a young woman accused of being Jewish. She is taken in for 'questioning', leading to torture. Her father appeals to Goya to intervene, since he had painted both the girl and her inquisitor. They arrive at a 'solution' which sees her locked up. Fifteen years later, Napoleon arrives, and appoints the inquisitor as a prosecutor. The girl is let out of jail, together with her child...

Laura Bushell quote iconDespite noteworthy attention to period detail in production and costume design, these are not enough to carry the film's confused plot.

Chicago Sunday Times
Roger Ebert quote iconLike the Goya prints being examined by the good fathers of the Inquisition in the opening scene, the images stand on their own, resisting the pull toward narrative, yet adding up to a portrait of grotesque people debased by their society.

ReelViews
James Berardinelli quote iconThe film isn't quite bad enough that it can be appreciated on that level. The costumes and set design are top notch and there are occasional scenes that hit the mark, although not nearly enough of them to justify the price of admission. On the whole, Goya's Ghosts feels like a missed opportunity.

Tomatometer quote iconOrnate costumes and a talented cast can't make up for Ghosts' glacial pace and confused plot.
