The Savages

The Savages
A brother and sister have drifted apart since childhood. Their dad is living in an old age home, with a girlfriend, when he starts to lose his mind. Reluctantly, the two kids decide to move him closer to where they stay, and put in into a nursing home where he will be cared for. Dad gave the two of them a hard time as kids, so the situation is rather delicate. As the children are forced to co-operate for the first time in years, old wounds are opened, made more painful by dad's worsening condition.

The Citizen
Peter Feldman quote iconThe Savages is thought-provoking cinema and is likely to appeal to those who value the interaction of the characters and don't mind feeling uncomfortable about the eccentricities of the protagonists or the tension that exists between them.
14
BBC
Anna Smith quote icon It's an impressive film in many ways, but a bleak one without much emotional impact.
10
Chicago Sunday Times
Roger Ebert quote iconThe Savages confronts a day that may come in all of our lives. Two days, actually, the first when we are younger, the second when we are older.
18
eye Weekly
Jason Anderson quote iconThough conventional in other aspects, The Savages is unusual for its richness of characterization.
10
ReelViews
James Berardinelli quote iconthe film offers insight into painfully awkward family dynamics and, while a note of hope is sounded upon closing, it will not send audiences dancing to the exits.
15
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers quote iconGiven the subject matter — caring for an aging parent — The Savages is damn funny, as long as you don't mind laughs that stick in your throat.
18
ScreenIt
quote iconThe Savages benefits from engaging characters and related performances, sharp writing, and just the right touch to keep the material from becoming sappy and/or melodramatic.
