Stop! that bicycle was made by aliens....
An American artist living in Paris decides to tell his wife the story of his youth. So we flashback to Greenwich Village, New York, and follows the adventures of a teenage boy as he tries to deal with his depressed mother and retarded janitor friend. He also makes friends with a black woman in jail — the titular House of Detention. The main storyline revolves around a stolen bicycle.
