When Quayle (Kevin Spacey), a lonely upstate New Yorker, loses his estranged wife (Cate Blanchett) in a car accident, his life changes forever. Stricken with grief and longing, he retreats with his aunt (Dame Judi Dench) and young daughter to Newfoundland, the mysterious home of his ancestors.Though Quoyle has had little success thus far in life, his Shipping News column in the newspaper ''The Gammy Bird'' finds an audience and his experiences in the town change his life. Gradually a romance develops with Wavey (Julianne Moore), a woman who lives with her own personal demons. As his new life unfolds, his past melts with his present and Quoyle is transformed. A story about triumph and transformation, as one man seeks to rebuild his shattered life and mend his battered soul.
