Everybody’s Fine

A year after his wife died, an ailing old man decides to hold a family reunion with his four kids. They all decline, so he decides to pay them all surprise visits. Due to his health he has to travel by public transport, but he embarks on this long road trip anyway. However his kids are not exactly glad to see him, and he gets the distinct impression that three of them are hiding things about themselves, and about their missing brother.

An unhappily married couple are struggling financially when they get a bizarre offer: push the button on a wooden box, and receive one million dollars while killing a stranger. The wife takes the bait, but that sets in motion an unexpected chain of events involving an alien invasion.

This is Rob Marshall’s musical followup to Chicago. It is the film version of a Broadway musical based on the film ”8½” by Fellini. It tells the story of a once-succesful director, struggling to get his latest movie off the ground. Although filming has already started, he has yet to produce a script. He seeks solace in nine different women in his life, ranging from his wife and mistress through his leading lady to his deceased mother and a prostitute he knew as a kid. Reviews have been mixed.

A young man has never gotten over his brother’s suicide years ago. A young woman has never gotten over her mother’s murder, also a few years ago. Fate contrives for them to meet with an agenda … he is supposed to romance and then dump her as a favour to his buddy, who has a score to settle with the girl’s cop father. The romancing part works so well that we never get to the dumping part… and then 9/11 arrives.

Shutter Island

Set in 1954, a WW II vet is now an FBI agent. He and a colleague are sent to a hospital for the criminally insane, on Shutter Island, to investigate the disappearance of a women who had killed her children. After meeting the creepy staff and looking around, things take a turn for the dramatic as a category 5 hurricane hits, stripping walls open and revealing all sorts of hidden secrets …

This highly-rated war drama takes a look at a bomb disposal squad operating in Iraq. We focus on three men, in particular the new squad leader, and two of his underlings, who have only a few weeks left before returning Stateside. The new leader has a reckless streak and pushes his men into dangerous situations, which is of course at odds with his men’s desire to go home alive …

Precious

This crowd-pleaseing arthouse drama tells the story of an overweight black teen, pregnant for the second time by her father. Although he is mostly absent, he has abused her physically since she was an infant, while her mother abuses her verbally and psychologically. Luckily this time around a kindly teacher and social worker take her under their wings and begin to offer her a different life… an opportunity that she grasps with both hands.
