Trespass

Another outwit-the-crooks thriller. A bunch of thieves force their way into a large modern house secluded in the woods, and demand access to the safe that they know is hidden somewhere. The father refuses, fearing they will all be shot once access is granted. Thus begins the game of cat and mouse as the family and the crooks continually try to gain the upper hand, pitting brains against weapons.

The Descendants

This much-decorated film is set in Hawaii. A water-skiing accident lands mom in a coma. Dad is forced into a role he is not used to, that of actively looking after his two teen daughters. At the same time, he’s trying to sell a large family property which would leave the family very wealthy. Things do not look good for mom, and then he learns some disturbing news about her, which sends him and the girls on an island-hopping journey of discovery. The film was nominated for five Oscars, including best film, director, actor and adapted script.

Man on a Ledge

A heist film masquerading as a suicide thriller. An ex-cop is awaiting trail for stealing a diamond. While out to attend dad’s funeral, he escapes, makes his way to a hotel, and climbs out onto a ledge, 21 floors up. That attracts the expected attention, as a pretty negotiator tries to talk him down while the SWAT guys get ready to do their thing. Meanwhile, across the street, his brother is busy trying to break into a diamond dealer’s safe to get evidence that he was framed. The plotlines come together in the dramatic finale, which has been described as a let-down.

Jack and Jill

Sandler’s cross-dressing experiment has been poorly received. He’s a happily married man with two kids. Every year, his annoying twin sister comes to visit. His wife enjoys her company, while he can’t wait to get rid of her. This year, he is trying to get Al Pacino to star in a commercial. Al falls head over heels in love with the sister, but she’s only interested in the gardener. So Sandler pulls out all the stops trying to hook his sister up with Al so that Al will agree to do the commercial.

Agneepath

In a small Indian village a young boy is taught about the path of fire by his father. His life is shattered completely when an evil drug lord kills his father. He leaves for Mumbai with his pregnant mother, and takes an oath that he will return back to his village to avenge his father’s death. In Mumbai, he is taken under the wings of the biggest drug lord. From here on it is a journey of revenge where he makes and breaks many relationships only to get closer to his aim. He finds support in his only friend, a pretty woman, who stands by him every moment of his life. Fifteen years later, his chance for revenge arrives. In Hindi language with English subtitles.

We Need to Talk About Kevin

Based on a best-selling novel, this film is a bleak and emotional study of the relationship between a mother and her disturbed son. She never really wanted to be a mother, and did not do a good raising the boy, who turned out to have a serious problem which ultimately tore his family apart. The film has won numerous awards and nominations.

J. Edgar

Clint Eastwood’s latest biopic takes a look at the life of J. Edgar Hoover, who built and ran the FBI for 50 years. A complex individual, he amassed secret dossiers on everyone of note, and used this to secure his position and influence as presidents came and went. His public persona, however, was very different to what happened behind closed doors.
