Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

President by day. Hunter by night.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Based on a novel with the same name, this film takes a very revisionist look at one of America's favourite presidents. After losing his mother to a vampire, young Abe swears to spend the rest of his life fighting them. Luckily for him he meets a man able to teach him how to kill them, and spends the first half of the movie in kill mode. As he progresses politically, the storyline introduces the concept that Southern slave owners were vampires who kept slaves as cheap prey for their blood lust, and getting rid of that was the real reason for the American civil war. Generally the critics were underwhelmed, and suggest you may want to catch the 2D version rather than the 3D version of this film. This is the 2D version.

What the Critics say

Cape Times
Justin Lowe quote iconTitle suggests a hybrid between history lesson and horror show, but film is a mishmash of styles. Delivers thrills and gore but is too lightweight and conventional.

Box Office
Kate Erbland quote iconAbraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is the sort of silly, self-contained nonsense that should go straight to home video, a film that seems too ludicrous to be made by a big studio and put in front of millions of movie-going eyeballs.

ReelViews
James Berardinelli quote iconThe concept of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is worthy of a good chuckle or two, but the execution proves that sometimes a clever title does not beget a production of equal value.
13
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers quote iconThe movie deserves a stake through the heart.

C. Fuchs quote iconIt shouldn't have worked as a novel. But it did, becoming a big best-seller. And it shouldn't have worked as a motion picture. But it does

Tomatometer quote iconAbraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has visual style to spare, but its overly serious tone doesn't jibe with its decidedly silly central premise, leaving filmgoers with an unfulfilling blend of clashing ingredients.
