Based on a best-selling novel, this film is a bleak and emotional study of the relationship between a mother and her disturbed son. She never really wanted to be a mother, and did not do a good raising the boy, who turned out to have a serious problem which ultimately tore his family apart. The film has won numerous awards and nominations.
