Planet 51

Something strange is coming to their planet...Us!

Planet 51
In this animated spoof of the E.T. story, our hero is an American astronaut who lands on Planet 51 (a reference to Area 51 and the Roswell UFO incident), intending to claim it for America. Much to his surprise, the planet is already inhabited by curious green people-like creatures, who naturally speak perfect English. He ropes in a young boy to help him return to his spaceship, but they run out of time as the army draws closer, determined to deal with the alien threat.

Roger Ebert quote iconAlthough not bowling me over, Planet 51 is a jolly and good-looking animated feature in glorious 2-D.

eye Weekly
Eleni Deacon quote iconWith its algae-coloured aliens, arrogant yet gold-hearted astronaut and precocious mechanical puppy, Planet 51’s formula makes it feel suspiciously like some hybrid adventure starring Shrek, Buzz Lightyear and Wall-E.
5
ScreenIt
C. Fuchs quote iconAn okay diversion, but really isn't the best example of an Earth-made, computer-animated comedy for some alien civilization to pick up while scouring the heavens for sign of intelligent life somewhere else in their universe.

Tomatometer quote iconPlanet 51 squanders an interesting premise with an overly familiar storyline, stock characters, and humor that alternates between curious and potentially offensive.
