This Kiwi movie is set during the 1860s, a time of racial conflict between the white settlers and native Maoris. An Irish woman had had a son with a Maori man. Now seven years old, the boy is kidnapped by his Maori grandfather. Mom decides to journey upriver to bring him back, at a time of growing tensions between the whites and Maoris. As she falls for her son's uncle, she finds herself on both sides in the middle of a racial war.
