The Brave One

How many wrongs to make it right?

The Brave One
A New York radio talk show host is soon to be married, when she and her boyfriend are attacked by muggers. He ends up dead, she in hospital for a few days. On recovering, she finds her love for the city replaced by fear. After buying a gun, she is forced to use it in self defense, which introduces her to the art of killing. Finding some comfort in ridding the streets of scum, she seeks out more to dispose of. This attracts the attention of both the media and the cops, and soon the cop is on her radio show. One thing leads to another as cop and killer dance around each other, each trying to deal with their own moral issues about right and wrong and crime and justice. Reviews have been mixed, praising the performances and dissing the script.

eye Weekly
Jason Anderson quote iconNeil Jordan's ponderous, self-important movie is gradually drained of any of the momentum or force you might expect from a revenge tale.

ReelViews
James Berardinelli quote iconThe Brave One is a smart and thought-provoking motion picture that re-examines a genre without violating its conventions. Not since The Crying Game has Jordan crafted as compelling a motion picture.
18
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers quote iconFoster is electrifying as ego and id clash and the movie fires up with genuine provocation.

quote iconI only wish the writing effort matched that of the stars' performances that end up pretty much being wasted amongst the banality and familiarity of it all.
