This is a dramatisation of the story of Esther from the Old Testament. She was an orphaned Jewish teenager. He uncle persuades her to audition for the part of Queen, after the Persian Emperor Xerxes fired his wife for insolence. However, she had to keep her Jewishness a secret. With some special coaching, she made the grade, but soon became involved in the palace intrigues, and found she had to make tough decisions about her own future, and that of her people.
