A happily married dog catcher starts reading a short book called ''The Number 23,'' which is about a private detective trying to stop a woman from committing suicide. The woman is obsessed with the number 23, and this obsession eventually rubs off on the detective. Back in the real world, the dog catcher sees multiple parallels in this story to his own life, and becomes likewise obsessed with the number 23, which eventually leads him to the grave of a murder victim. This has far-reaching repercussions for his life, and those around him.
