Steven Soderbergh's film noir, filmed appropriately in black and white, is set in 1945 Berlin, right after the Second World War. An American miltary correspondent arrives to cover the peace conference, and finds that his driver has hooked up with his old girlfriend, a prostitute desperate to get out of Berlin. However both the Americans and Russians are interested in finding her husband, whom she claims is dead, and so they prevent her from leaving. Then there is a murder, and the military correspondent switches into investigative mode to dig up the truth. This leads him into hot water with powerful people, endangering both his and his girlfriend's lives.
