Set in 1994 and based on a true story, a young new teacher arrives at a Los Angeles school, just two years after the L.A. riots. She is faced with an ethnic class full of hangups and attitude, and feels inspired to help them. She gets them reading The Diary of Anne Frank, and this leads to them all keeping their own journals, which begins the healing process. However not everything is plain sailing, as she meets lots of opposition both at home and on the job.
