This award-winning South African movie is about an retarded orphaned six-year-old boy who is taken in by a young black boy and a caring old white lady. They settle down into a happy if unconventional family unit. When the orphan is forced to go to school, he encounters problems with the local bully and his gang. In spite of some help from a young girl and an old man, he is forced to face up to his tormenters and discovers compassion and family love.
