The novel, ''The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Esq.'' by Laurence Sterne is considered by many to be unfilmable, due to its odd construction and rambling plotline. Director Winterbottom gives it a go anyway, by not actually filming it. Instead, he presents a story about a small cast and crew trying to film this unfilmable book. The action moves back and forth between the real-world actors, and their counterparts in the 18th century, which provides the backdrop for clever jokes and acting/moviemaking references. This film is most likely to appeal to experienced filmgoers and industry insiders.
