In this award-winning movie, a shy and sensitive high school student is having trouble coping with life. He seeks refuge in sucking his thumb, something that he can only do in private. His parents aren't much help, so he turns to his orthodontist, who tries different approaches to the problem. One works well, and our teen is soon the star of the debating team and making progess with the girl of his dreams. Unfortunately he decides to try a few chemicals of his own, which have unintended consquences. He finally gets some good advice at a rehab clinic.
