During the Greco-Turkish war of 1919-1922, many Greek women felt that they had no future in Greece, and became mail-order brides in order to get to America. Seven hundred of them were transported in one ship, where an American photojournalist was documenting the saga. He finds himself falling for a poor Greek woman.
