Set in the 1950s, a young art history teacher relocates from liberal California to a conservative women-only college in the East. There, she discovers to her horror that the college and community is taking talented young women and stifling their ambitions, reducing them to wanting a husband more than a career. As she sets about challenging the situation, she predictably runs into stiff opposition from the establishment.
