A coming-of-age tale set in a Maori village in New Zealand. The village chief's wife dies in childbirth, leaving a live daughter and dead son. Distraught, dad leaves for Europe, leaving his baby daughter in the care of her grandparents. A decade later, grandpa decides he needs a replacement chief, since his son is not coming back, and starts teaching the young men in the village the ''old ways''. His granddaughter wants to learn too, but she is a girl... eventually, nature takes a hand and opens everyone's eyes. The movie has been a favourite at film festivals.
