A teenage girl's mom kills her father and is sent to prison. The girl is sent to a series of foster homes, having very different experiences in each one, while still trying to retain her bond to her mother in jail. The mother, the poisonous pretty flower of the title, does her best to control her daughter's life from behind bars. In essence, a coming-of-age tale, likely to appeal more to women.
