K-19: The Widowmaker

We need better raincoats! This is based on a true story of one of the first Russian nuclear submarines, set during the height of the cold war between Russia and the US. The Russians were worried about a missile attack from the US, so decided to stage a show of strength. The plan was to take a nuclear submarine under the Arctic ice, surface, and fire off a test missile, knowing that the American spy satellites would detect it. However, the nuclear power station on board was a little faulty. Also, the ship had a new commander, while the crew remained more loyal to their previous captain, now second-in-command. These human tensions, combined with the physical problems, pushed the men to breaking point and required heroic behaviour on their part to survive.

Ian Douglas: Don't compare this submarine movie to U-571, it is very different. Firstly, it is about the Russians, which is one of the reasons that it did not do well in the USA. Secondly, the enemy is something invisible -- radiation. There are no battle scenes, although there are plenty of other tense scenes. The film has been compared to ''Thirteen Day'', in feel. A film about men making courageous decisions to deal with a bad situation. Will probably not appeal to women, but discerning males might find it worthwhile.
