The Importance of Being Earnest

Good thing Charlie's aunt isn't here... Yet another remake of the Oscar Wilde classic. For those that don't know the story, it is a complex comedy of mistaken identity. Our hero, Jack, an orphan left a fortune by his adoptive father, uses the name Ernest whenever in the city, so that he can misbehave without damaging his name. He also has to look after a young woman, inherited from his foster father. His buddy in town learns of her existence, and decides to meet her. So while Jack was in the city, buddy goes off to meet the young lady, assuming Jack's fake identity, Ernest, for the occasion. Soon thereafter, Jack, the love of his life, and her mother arrive back home... and so the games begin... will the real Ernest please stand up?...

The Moviesite Fan Club comments
Ian Douglas: Well, Wilde is as witty as ever... The film never reaches any great heights, yet does provide a pleasant evening's entertainment, though I suspect mainly for an older audience. Apparently, in Wilde's time, "earnest" was a synonym for homosexual, which does lend a different interpretation to many comments in the movie...
