Mama Africa

Sometimes culture is also a prison... This is not one movie, but three short films by three different African directors, being screened back-to-back. The films are ''Close up on Bintou'' by Fanta Regina Nacro of Burkina Faso, ''Raya'' by Zulpha Otto-Sallies from South Africa, and ''Riches'' by Ingrid Sinclair from Zimbabwe. In ''Bintou'', a woman who has been terrorised by her husband learns to become self-sufficient with the aid of a Woman's Support Group. ''Raya'' takes a look at a young Muslim woman recently released from prison, who finds herself still imprisoned by the culture she grew up in. ''Riches'' take a look at life in a traditional village, where there is sexual harassment and rejection, yet lasting friendships too.

78 minutes, Parental Guidance (Language).
