The Deep End A mother of three discovers that her eldest son is possibly having a homosexual affair with an older man. She asks the older man to desist, but he demands money to do so. Later that night, the man and her son quarrel outside. The next morning, she discovers the body of the older man on the beach, and, fearing the worst, decides to dump his body in the lake. After the body is discovered, she is approached by a man with a videotape of her son and the deceased, demanding a large sum of money. Ian Douglas: I see my rating is a little out of line with the Americans. Swinton gives a gripping performance, and has deservedly won praise for it, however the story moves a trifle too slowly, and, on reflection, the ending is way too convenient, neatly wrapping up all her problems without ever resolving the initial dilemma. It may appeal more to women, especially mothers.
