The Man Who Cried
In essence, a coming of age tale for a young woman. As a Jewish girl
in Russia around the time of the Great Depression, her father
leaves for America to earn money. Years later, as a young
woman, she ends up in Paris on the eve of World War II. She
is working as a singer and dancer in the theatre, where she
makes friends with a Gypsy man. At the same time, her mate is
throwing herself at a famous Italian singer. Then the Germans
invade, and their hatred of Jews and Gypsies soon causes

Ian Douglas: This may appeal more to women -- I did not enjoy it and found it tedious. The presence of Johhny Depp is sure to pack in the females, especially as he is once again the romantic lead. The film is partially redeemed by some great music and (operatic) singing. |
