Sade

Another version of the recent ''Quills'', set around the same time in the life of the Marquis de Sade and with a similar storyline. At the time of the ''Terror'' during the French Revolution, the Marquis was one of a number of French aristocrats arrested to await the guillotine. While in prison, he makes the acquaintance of a virginal young woman who is quite taken with him... Meanwhile, his common-law wife is doing her best to keep him alive, even if it means sleeping with the enemy.

Ian Douglas: The film, much like Quills, plays out much like a De Sade story, with bits of sex and violence. There is some interesting dialogue and points of view, mainly from De Sade, but on the whole, it merely plods along till the end. De Sade is painted as somewhat more refined and benevolent than in Quills.
