Moulin Rouge

Money or words... what do I need most?... Set around the beginning of the 1900s in and about the famous Moulin Rouge nightclub in Paris, this is in essence a love triangle. The glamourous star of the show attracts the attention of two very different men -- a penniless writer, and a rich duke. They vie for her love, but she has a much more serious problem of her own that she is not even aware of. We follow the course of the relationships as they work to put together a new Spectacular show. Note: Although this film has an "All Ages" rating, it is not a kiddie movie as it has mature themes and dialogue.

The Moviesite Fan Club comments

Ian Douglas: Mmm well the foreign critics were certainly impressed. On the good side, this is typical Baz Luhrmann stuff, starting off way over the top and staying there much of the time. He borrows liberally from all over, mixing in modern music with a twist. The performances, production values and visual effects are great. So why did I give it an average rating? Well, I was suffering from sensory overload -- the music was way too loud, obscuring the speech at times, and leaving me with a serious headache. Even the visuals got too overpowering at times -- almost a case where ''more'' is not necessarily better. Some of the acting came across as childish, like something from the Marx brothers. And for all the fresh ideas, the ''tragic love triange'' is hardly a new plotline. One would have hoped for a happy ending. So I think this is going to be one of those movies that some people will love and others won't.

Andre Mes (31): Brilliant! I was blown away by the visuals, music, and Baz's unique style. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor had perfect chemistry and their voies... mesmerising. Film of the year!

Colleen Swart (40): Not at all what I expected. Too loud, too fast, too much.

Justin Johnson (19): WOW!! Talk about a magical musical moment! This is a genius Baz Luhrman piece of work. WOW!! The combination of songs is interwoven seemlessly, and the acting and storyline from 'life' to 'stage' is absolutely amazing!! Deserves well over 5 stars! The DVD experience is one that is worth watching time and time again... WATCH IT!!! You won't be sorry you did!

Jaco van der Merwe (32): An absolutely fantastic film! Even better than Luhrmann's "Romeo & Juliet". It deserves quite a few film awards. It's a roller coaster ride of lush colours, snappy script, and a very original and striking use of existing songs. Make sure you see it in Dolby Stereo!

Barry Myburgh (52): This movie should have been a stage production where one could share the fantasy with the actors. It did not work on screen. What made matters worse was that I was one of only 4 people in the theatre, so one could not even connect with the audience. As a stage production, I believe it would have been a hit. SO-SO.

Antointte Bezuidenhout (31): The best film I've seen this year!

Michael Daiber (40): Although watching this movie is hard work, it is brilliant. Absolute concentration is required throughout. To fully appreciate this movie one should see it more than once. I would not expect this movie to appeal to all audiences.

Andreas Lupp (20): This film is visually weaved as thick as a royal persian carpet. Do not go in and expect to see everything with the amount of detail that has been put into this project. The film is incredibly focused and the points of "Beauty, Freedom, Truth and Love", echo in every scene. Brilliant acting from Nicole Kidman and a very good soundtrack, make this film very enjoyable and will keep it in popular memory for some time to come, like it or not.
