Set in Panama City, this spy thriller from Le Carré has at its centre two very different men: the disgraced, licentious MI6 operative, and the tailor, with a past he would prefer his wife not to know. The spy recruits the tailor, who is an accomplished liar. Put under intense pressure to come up with useful information, he takes to inventing a few facts about the sale of the Panama Canal, as well as a possible revolution in the offing. Word of this gets back to the spooks in London and Washington, and soon the Yanks are set for another invasion...

Ian Douglas: As usual, an impeccably researched work from Le Carre. A very convincing performance from Rush as the tailor. Brosnan (or Le Carre) seems a little unsure of exactly what he is, somewhere between James Bond and a sleazebag. The story is perhaps a more genuine real-life espionage case study than your typical Bond actioner, and provides an interesting character study for those interested in the field.
