Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Set 60 years into the future, planet Earth has been invaded
by phantoms from the stars. These phantoms attack earth life,
draining them of their life force. This has pushed mankind
into secure enclosed cities in an effort to survive. We follow
the attempts by our heroine, a scientist, to gather eight
special spirits which together will create a wave to neutralise
the invaders. Her task is complicated by the general who wants
to launch yet another physical attack on the phantoms. The film
is based on a video game, and features cutting-edge state-of-the-art
photo-realistic animation.103 minutes, Parental Guidance. Action, Thriller. You can usually find additional (copyrighted) pictures, trailers, etc, on the Official Site. |

Ian Douglas: Astounding quality in the art department, both the animation and rendering of humans, as well as incredibly detailed, and often beautiful, backgrounds. It can not get a whole lot better than this. The film, however, is let down by the storyline, which is a real mishmash of mumbo-jumbo new-age sillyness, likely to offend some religious types. A real pity that such ground-breaking animation did not have a more original and sensible plot. In spite of this, the story still manages to hold attention, and at least it *does* have a storyline. Worth seeing, just for the artwork.
Craig Nicholson (24): Brilliant animation. Weak and at times boring storyline. |
