After being passed over for promotion at her university, a female musicologist heads off to the Appalachian mountains to spend the summer with her sister. There, she soon discovers that the local folk songs are distinctive versions of classic English ballads, and so she sets about recording them and writing them down. This action does not go down well with some of the townsfolk, who feel exploited.
