Love's a Bitch Set in Mexico, this is a series of three interlinked stories, exploring many aspects of love. The participants in each of the three stories are never aware of the plotlines in the other two, they touch each other only marginally. The stories are linked by a huge dog, which has an unbeaten record in pit-fighting. The first part revolves around a young man living with his brother and sister-in-law. He has the hots for her, and tries to raise money by fighting the dog, so that he can elope with her. Naturally things do not go as planned, and he has an accident with the stars of the next section, a model and her married lover. The accident also brings the hero of the third section into the picture, he is an ex-guerrilla now living on the streets and doing the occasional assassination for money. Note: Dog lovers are advised to skip this one, it will just upset them. Spanish language with English subtitles. Original title: Amores Perros. 153 minutes, No persons under 16 (Language, Violence). Ian Douglas: Certainly an unusual movie, with the staggered timelines and interlinking stories. The middle section is the least interesting. Pretty violent at times, especially with the dogs. The film does explore many different types of love, but, since a lot of the role players come from the lower side of life, they are not really pleasant people and that makes the movie difficult to *enjoy*. Still, I thought it was well done and should appeal to art movie lovers.
