The Exorcist A re-release of the classic horror thriller, with some new scenes and a jacked-up soundtrack. In essence, a young girl becomes possessed by some evil spirit, and two priests try to get the spirit out of her. It is a difficult battle, as their opponent is much more powerful than they are and seems immune to their prayers and commands. Expect some gory scenes which may upset sensitive viewers, and some of the subject matter may offend some religious people. 122 minutes, No persons under 16 (Language, Violence, Prejudice). Horror, Thriller. Where's it showing?

Ian Douglas: Okay, everybody is raving about this movie, and I'm wondering what the fuss was all about. I was certainly not scared in the preview, in fact I found the whole thing rather dull. Maybe it's because I don't believe in demon possession, or we've had too many such movies lately, or because we know Hollywood can do anything with special effects, so nothing shocks anymore. Though I suppose impressionable people could still have nightmares from some of the images, which are really quite unpleasant. David Newton 26: You know we've come a long way when a film like this still upsets the pressure groups. As I see it, this is a cult movie - not an occult film. The powerful imagery and jaded history of this narrative has made it a ''must see'' flick for anyone that considers themselves as cinema-literate. William Peter Blatty's masterpiece is stunningly adapted to the screen by the infamous director William Friedkin. I suggest that you grab the special edition DVD for the backstory to this pic - it enhances the experience. I feel I must comment that the ''rawness'' of this film is what makes it upsetting for most and while no-one can honestly say that this movie is ''enjoyable'' - it is definitely rivetting. At the time of the original theatrical release there were outcries and protests outside theaters in the states. This film sheds light on how our society views it's commitment to freedom of expression. If you can't find the headspace to see this film, at least allow others to make the choice. (Of course - all these protests are great for publicity!)
