Cradle Will Rock

All together now... For he's a jolly good fellow.. A look at the staging of the (in)famous play "The Cradle Will Rock" back in the 1930s. America was going through one of their anti-communism purges, this time with the emphasis on keeping the reds out of the theatre. They were also still recovering from the Great Depression, and so most theatre was state-funded. The film explores the problems with the play, which had a distinctly left-wing theme, and the ground-breaking premiere, which was in a hired theatre with no props or costumes. Other aspects of life at the time are brought out in the subplots.

132 minutes, No persons under 13.
Drama, Romance, On the Art Circuit.

The Moviesite Fan Club comments

Ian Douglas: Took ages to get going, but once it gone into its stride it wasn't so bad. They could have cut some of the subplots and trimmed the first hour considerably. While foreign critics praised the acting, I thought that at least two of the actors over-acted terribly.
