Once they realise that the promised paradise does not and will not exist, they desire to return to France. One problem: the government won't let them go. Living in an environment that distrusts foreigners and where everyone spies on everyone else, the family goes through tough times while husband and wife desperately try to wangle a plan to escape the country. The American reviewers did not like it, but the film was nominated for many awards (including the Oscar) and won a few. French with English subtitles.

Ian Douglas: An engaging drama, even if I found the actions of the characters rather difficult to agree with at times. Interesting look at life in a totalitarian state.
Michael Moye (50): Well-meaning, but often tedious look at totalitarian Russia. Heavy handed and badly scripted. Good performances, though.
