A period Dutch drama, with complex characters who haunt you for days afterwards. Basically the tale of a young man's struggle to raise his position in the world, while all the time being thwarted -- and helped -- by his father, who is angry at his mother because she would not marry him. Personally, I found it better than the American critics, this may be because our culture has more in common with the Dutch than the USA does. It won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Dutch with English subtitles.
