A garbage man is so shy and recessive that he can barely utter a complete sentence. Into his life blazes drifter Henry Fool, a charismatic philosopher-king of depravity and wanna-be author. His artistic example inspires the garbage man to write an epic poem that provokes dramatic, violent reactions in its readers and ultimately makes him world-famous, while Henry is reduced to envy as he watches his protege surpass him. Still, Henry unwittingly accomplishes an even rarer feat: through sheer personal magnetism, he transforms the brutal neighborhood into a caring community.
