Lolita

Will you marry me? This year's most controversial film, and still banned for cinema release in America. Well, not actually banned, but nobody has the guts to release it.

The film is a remake of a 1962 black and white film directed by Stanley Kubrick, and starring James Mason, which has already been shown on TV here. Naturally the older version is not nearly so explicit.

The story is about a middle-aged man who marries a young mother, so that he can be close to her teenage daughter, since these two are having a bit of an affair. However, little darling's heart belongs to another, leading to tragedy all round.

The Moviesite Fan Club comments
Shaun Myburg: Unfortunately this film was critized rather for subject than for content. The idea of a middle-aged man obssessed with a teenage girl is enough for the viewers to scream bloody murder. However the reasoning behind Irons' infatuation with Miss Swain is explained in the very first scene. This sets the film moving on a non-stop rollercoaster ride of emotions from sympathy to hatred and everything inbetween. Don't think of this film as an art film, but rather as a "life" film. Superb performance that should knock on uncle Oscar's door next year added to great location filming proves this is one of the surprise films of the year.

Bruce Humphrey: The movie that the USA is too frightened to screen for fear of public repercussions. Shows you how broadminded SA's censors have become! Dominique Swain is an incredible 13 year old actress and Jeremy Irons (with a haunted look) and Melanie Griffith (as a real loose-moralled mother who the kid no doubt treats as a role-model) act excellently. Don't judge the movie too deeply - such perversion involving under age girls can be really very upsetting (Even if she initiated it - was she old enough to know the consequences of what she was doing (Yes?..No?). Brilliant movie of yet another controversial subject!

Lex Faurè: Excellent, slow and sensitive - superb performance by Jeremy Irons.
