Comments: Nightwatch

Well, after the little Irish romance, it's back to the horror thrillers...

The story revolves around a struggling student, who, desperate for money, takes the unlikely job as a nightwatchman in a medical examiner's building. This building is really large, although we only get to see a few rooms and passageways.

Oddly enough, the guard gets to sit in a small office in the large foyer, with all the lights off except some small lights in his office. This makes for the required creepy setting. His quick tour of the premises - and the required inspection routine - by the old retiring guard naturally shows us all the places where we can expect disaster to strike. This includes the morgue, which has hanging cords connected to the alarm system.

These are there in case someone comes to in the morgue. They will be able to pull the cord and get help, since the door can't open from the inside. What, were they worried the bodies will get up and walk around? Further, do they really expect someone who recovers in a cold, dark room full of dead bodies, to be able to find a dangling cord?

This scenario provides one of the scary moments in the film, when the alarm from the morgue goes off in the nightwatchman's office...

The film is really a crime mystery - some guy is killing prostitutes, and our poor hero gets framed for the murders. Naturally, the director provides us with a selection of likely suspects, all of whom are innocent, while the one guy who looks innocent isn't. Surprise, surprise!

Speaking of the director, he liked this story so much that he made the film twice - once in his native Danish, and now in English. Frankly, he shouldn't have bothered - it's not that great.

The film is creepy enough, especially with the persistant dark and gloomy surrounding - and the fact that it is in a morgue, but it is not really scary - there are not enough shocks at all. Like I said, most of the possible frights are telegraphed well in advance, and, like a three-part joke, the first two nights are just to lull you into a false sense of security before the nerve-wracking bits hit you.

There are a few holes in the plot, like the bloody body that went walkies, when later there is no trace of the blood anywhere. I was somewhat disappointed that we didn't have any zombies walking around, committing murder and mayhem etc.

There is a gruesome bit near the end which the women sitting in front of me did not appreciate. One does get so attached to one's thumbs, after all.

If you need a woman to cling to you tightly, take her to see this film...
