The Boxer
Another film which takes a somber look at the problems in Northern Ireland, this time through the eyes of different factions in the IRA.
Our hero, recently released from prison after 14 years for a bombing spree, sets up a boxing school for Protestant and Catholics boys, in an attemt to let them get to know each other and so become friends. However this plan backfires and causes more violence in the community. Meantime, he tries to catch on some romance, and begins dating the daughter of the local IRA leader, who just happens to be married to a man still in jail. This puts her under a lot of pressure. 114 minutes "), No persons under 16 (Violence, Language). Drama. You can usually find additional (copyrighted) pictures, trailers, etc, on the Official Site. |

| Bruce Humphrey: The fact that this movie wasn't nominated for any Oscars proves to me that the Academy of Arts is frightened of even touching anything political! Set in Northern Ireland, it is ironic that the boxer fights for a living but is a peace-seeking man in his private life whereas the extremists have "peaceful" jobs but in reality plant car bombs/murder and hate people all for the "cause". Excellent acting by Daniel Day-Lewis and Emily Watson (she is so cute!). An emotional and heart-rending story which nevertheless leaves you feeling somewhat elated at the end. Watch out for the broad Irish accent. Bless the peacemakers and curse the war-mongers of the world!
