Drawing its inspiration from the famous Indian erotic work of the same name, this is the story of two women - one noble, one a servant, and their growth to womanhood. Their friendship is broken when the servant seduces the husband-to-be of her friend the night before their wedding. As an outcast, she joins up with a sculptor, and starts taking lessons in love from a woman who used to run the royal harem. Her sculptor lover is afraid of commitment, so she leaves him and becomes a concubine to her ex-friend's husband. This brings the film to its dramatic climax.
